By now if you haven’t listened to smash record “Panda”, no worries because we’re going to press rewind and introduce you to who the internet sensation better known as Desiigner is and how he got his deal with G.O.O.D Music.
In 2015 if someone told the teenage rapper from Bed Stuy that by 2016 he would have a record deal and one of the hottest records in the country, he probably wouldn’t have believed you. Sidney Selby III better known as Desiigner has become an internet sensation overnight. With his breakout smash getting over 3 million streams on SoundCloud, it earned him a deal with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label, and he has Rochdale-based beatmaker Adnan Khan, aka Menace and his manager Zana Ray to thank for it. It was Menace who sold him the beat back in 2014 and his manager who encouraged him to finish the record after a year and a half of holding onto it.
Gaining the attention of Plain Pat, an A&R for Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo in Brooklyn, who played the record for Kanye, subsequently Desiigner was invited out to LA to meet with Kanye West. While at LAX airport, Kanye would share what is now present “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2,” which is formulated from “Panda”. In a interview with FADER, Desiigner explains that after the meeting he would go back to his studio and put together an as yet to be released record in which got him signed to G.O.O.D Music/Def Jam. It was made official at Kanye West’s fashion show/listening party at Madison Square Garden where he would announce that Desiigner was the newest signee to the label. Still a teenager, Desiigner is currently taking time off from school to pursue his career as a rapper on the G.O.O.D Music roster.
Checkout an excerpt below from his interview with FADER:
What’s a day in the life of Desiigner?
“A day in the life of Desiigner: it’s fun, it’s a lot of excitement. It’s a lot of focus also. I usually focus on my music and try to keep focused all day. But there be things you have to do, I learned, in between: interviews, pictures, autographs, support my fans, make sure I write to them. [Also,] I’m still in high school, but I can’t go back to my school because I’m too much of a distraction right now. I’m tryna get a tutor now so they can be with me on tour so I can get my high school diploma. I gotta get out of high school, that’s mandatory.”
You couldn’t have possibly imagined that you’d be doing what you’re doing now a month ago. Did you think “Panda” would change your life the way it did?
“I couldn’t say I could have possibly imagined this, but I see myself going further. I always see myself at a greater platform. I can be here ’cause that was what my plan was. I didn’t want a job, I knew I didn’t want a job. [Even if I hadn’t gotten signed, I would still be] delivering creativity and making all this happen. I’d make this happen one way or another. With all my music, I just make sure make it creative.”

Needless to say, Desiigner has raised some eyebrows drawing comparisons to Future with his smash record “Panda” but according to the Brooklyn rapper, this is only the beginning of what’s to come. One has to agree that Kanye West signed him so he seen something in him that others may not. With that being said, we can only wait to see what Desiigner has in store for the fans. Until then jam out to the smash single “Panda” below produced by Menace.
